Baltan Session: Baltan in the Bus Stop. DE STIJL versus RGB

On Thursday, April 7, 2011 Baltan Laboratories and the Van Abbemuseum host an evening dedicated to the current project in the Rietveld Bus Stop on the Stadhuisplein in Eindhoven: Baltan in the Bus Stop. DE STIJL versus RGB. The artists, Maurer United and Geert Mul, will discuss the project, followed by a conversation between architect Bertus Mulder, who worked closely with Rietveld in the 1960s, and Arie van Rangelrooy, architect and board member of the ‘Rietveld Bus Stop’ Foundation. The presentations will take place in the library of the Van Abbemuseum, followed by a visit to the project on the Stadhuisplein.

On a yearly basis since 1990, the ‘Rietveld Bus Stop’ Foundation invites someone from the art world to develop a project for the Rietveld Bus Stop at the Stadhuisplein in Eindhoven. This year they invited Christiane Berndes, curator at the Van Abbemuseum. She worked with Baltan Laboratories, and together with Angela Plohman, director of Baltan, they invited artists Geert Mul and Maurer United Architects to present their vision on the significance of Rietveld and De Stijl today. The project is installed until November 2011.

Geert Mul and Maurer United were inspired by the map of Eindhoven made out of mosaic tiles located on the wall under the roof of the shelter. It is one of the first city maps in public space. The square tiles from which the map is constructed give the image a pixellated character that echoes the early imagery of the computer age. In this design, Rietveld strayed from the typical red, yellow and blue colours of De Stijl. With the colours he chose to use (red, green, blue), he inadvertently made a connection to the television and computer age. In the column next to the shelter, Geert Mul and Maurer United placed images of universal worldviews and colour systems. They juxtaposed them with images of the practical counterparts of the colour systems in our daily lives: the screen, the television, the CD and the Pantone colour wheel. Furthermore, they replaced the original fluorescent lights in the column with LED lights in red, green and blue. Through the colour change of the LED lights, various layered images are made visible on the column.

BALTAN SESSION: BALTAN IN DE BUSHALTE
DE STIJL VERSUS RGB

Op donderdag 7 april organiseren Baltan Laboratories en het Van Abbemuseum een gespreksavond rond het project ‘Baltan in de bushalte. DE STIJL versus RGB’ voor de ‘bushalte’ van Rietveld aan het Stadhuisplein in Eindhoven. Na een toelichting van het project door de kunstenaars, Maurer United en Geert Mul, zal een gesprek plaatsvinden tussen architect Bertus Mulder, die in de jaren zestig nauw samenwerkte met Rietveld, en Arie van Rangelrooy, architect en bestuurslid van de stichting ‘De bushalte van Rietveld’. De avond vindt plaats in de bibliotheek van het Van Abbemuseum en wordt afgesloten met een bezoek aan het project op het Stadhuisplein.

Sinds 1990 nodigt de Stichting ‘De bushalte van Rietveld’ jaarlijks iemand uit de kunstwereld uit een project te ontwikkelen voor de Bushalte van Rietveld aan het Stadhuisplein in Eindhoven. Dit jaar is dat Christiane Berndes, conservator van het Van Abbemuseum. Zij werkte samen met Baltan Laboratories en nodigde in samenwerking met Angela Plohman, directeur van Baltan, kunstenaar Geert Mul en architectenduo Maurer United uit hun visie te geven op de betekenis van Rietveld en De Stijl voor onze huidige tijd. Het project is een jaar lang te zien, tot november 2011.

Geert Mul en Maurer United lieten zich inspireren door de kaart van Eindhoven die zich in mozaïek op de wand onder het afdak van het wachthuisje bevindt. Het is een van de eerste stadskaarten in de publieke ruimte. De vierkante mozaïektegeltjes waaruit de kaart is opgebouwd geven het beeld een pixelachtig karakter, zoals we dit kennen uit de vroege jaren van het computertijdperk. In dit ontwerp week Rietveld af van de voor De Stijl typische kleurstelling rood, geel, blauw en gebruikte vooral de kleuren rood, groen en blauw. Onbedoeld refereerde hij met deze kleurkeuze aan het mediatijdperk van televisie en computer. In de zuil naast het wachthuisje brachten Geert Mul en Maurer United afbeeldingen aan van universele wereldbeelden en kleursystemen. Ze combineerden deze met beelden van praktische toepassingen van kleursystemen in ons dagelijks leven: het beeldscherm, de televisie, de cd en de Pantone kleurenwaaier. Daarnaast vervingen de originele tl-verlichting in de zuil door LEDverlichting in rood, groen en blauw. Door de LED-verlichting van kleur te laten veranderen worden verschillende beelden in lagen op de zuil zichtbaar.
