Ever wondered what the universe could sound like? Or how Wall Street could help you create a music piece or sound installation? Following the 2-day workshop ‘Music, Deep Space and Wall Street’ by electronic musician, music producer and new media artist Valery Vermeulen (BE), will enable you to directly integrate data sonification and interactive sound synthesis into your own artistic practice.

The central theme of this 2-day workshop is how abstract, scientific data from e.g. deep space or the financial market can be used to produce music, soundscapes or sound art. The workshop starts with two creative disciplines: data sonification and interactive sound synthesis.

The workshop is subdivided into two modules: the first module shows participants how to use interactive sound synthesis in a practical way. Through open source platforms such as Pure Data and Reaper, participants develop their own sound palette. The second module of the workshop focuses on how these techniques can be used artistically for music and sound art purposes. Participants learn to work with e.g. astrophysical and econometric data sources.

This is followed by an introduction to the field of data sonification with direct practical application. Through this, participants learn how to use data streams in an artistic and meaningful way to compose a music piece, soundscape, and sound installation or to design an interactive project.

The workshop is inspired by Vermeulen's work in various projects including Mikromedas and Krystal Ball and his activities as an electronic musician and music producer.

    Requirements and prior knowledge:
For this workshop no prior knowledge is required. All used techniques and methods will be thoroughly explained and demonstrated. All concepts and methods in the workshop are applied in a direct way. This allows participants to use the acquired knowledge directly in their artistic practice.

With regard to practical requirements for the workshop, a standard laptop (Windows or Mac operating system) and headphones are sufficient.

    Tickets
    Regular ticket: €58 | Student ticket: €38
A maximum of 12 participants can join this workshop.
