POST DIGITAL PRINT

21/05/2012 to 02/06/2012

A series of activities around the publication of Post Digital Print. The Mutation of Publishing Since 1894 by Alessandro Ludovico
A collaboration between Onomatopee, Baltan Laboratories and the Kenniscentrum Creating 010, Hogeschool Rotterdam

From 21 May to 2 June, Alessandro Ludovico will be working as artist-in-residence at Baltan Laboratories and Onomatopee in Eindhoven. During this time he will be exploring the distributed archive and tools for post-digital print, stemming from research presented in his new book. Working with local students, he will build a DIY book scanning machine. For the rest of the residency period he will undertake a number of social experiments involving the book scanner. Several activities have been planned while Alessandro is in Eindhoven, including a workshop on May 30th, and a conference and the launch of the publication at Onomatopee on June 2nd. See the full agenda below. (more…)

With the title ‘Make it work’ the Platform Open Data Eindhoven is organising the National Open Data Congress on Friday, April 20th in Eindhoven. The conference focuses on the practical application of Open Data. Guest speakers include Adam Greenfield, Julian Tait, Frédérik Ruys and others. We’re very pleased to present our Beyond Data collaboration with Kitchen Budapest in the exhibition. Aside from a poster presentation, we will also show a demo of the project Between the Lines which was one of the works developed during our collaboration. The ‘Make it work’ exhibition can be seen from April 19-22, 2012 at the Stadhuis in Eindhoven (open from 13:00-17:00 each day).

Beyond Data book

Together with Kitchen Budapest and designer Eric de Haas, we’re busy working on a publication around our Beyond Data project. It will be launched on May 18th at the Dutch Electronic Festival in Rotterdam.

In addition to extensive documentation of the project and concepts developed during the Beyond Data collaboration, new essays by Amanda McDonald Crowley, Attila Nemes, and others have been specially commissioned to reflect on the theme, the open lab as a methodology, and the collaboration between the labs itself.

Informal Academy

26/06/2012 17:00 to 19:00

Baltan Laboratories presents a brand new series of monthly events for post-secondary students in Eindhoven called the Informal Academy. These evenings are focused on sharing innovative ideas at the intersection of art, design and technology.

The Informal Academy offers students a platform to share the research and projects they are working on with fellow students from related programs in Eindhoven. They have the opportunity to expand their network in an informal setting while gaining extra knowledge and feedback from like-minded participants from other schools: TU/e Industrial Design, Fontys Hogeschool ICT & Media Design, and Design Academy Eindhoven.

The first meeting took place on February 28th, 2012 at the TU/e Department of Industrial Design. The content of the evenings will be co-designed by the participants, depending on specialisation and fields of interest. It provides a bottom-up sustainable network, with motivated people who are looking to help and inspire each other. The next meeting takes place in June. If you are a student who is interested in joining the Informal Academy, join the Facebook Group or please send a mail to info[AT]baltanlaboratories.org.

BALTAN SESSION: THE TOOLS SERIES #4

28/03/2012 12:00 to 18:30

DIGITAL NATIVES

Date: 28 March 2012
Workshop (for max 16-20 participants): 12:00 – 17:00 (including lunch)
Public presentation of workshop results and drinks: 17:00-18:30
Location: TAC (Temporary Art Centre), Vonderweg 1, Eindhoven
To sign up for the workshop, please send an email to info[AT]baltanlaboratories.org by March 26, 2012.

The Tools Series is a series of Baltan Sessions that examines the complex and changing relationships artists and designers have with the technologies and tools they develop, modify or use to create, with an aim to explore social awareness around the tool choices they make as well as the (aesthetic) influences of these choices on the work they create. We also examine the role of the lab in supporting the creation of, access to and sharing of knowledge about these tools.

As a continuation of the series started in 2011, we present Tools Series #4: Digital Natives, a workshop led by Irma Földényi (HU), a Masters student in Social Design at Design Academy Eindhoven. During this session, Irma will introduce a method that she has created to facilitate her own design process, and open this up for new uses and interpretations by other artists and designers interested in technological culture. This is a cognitive tool that helps the participants create associations through pairs of images reflecting different extremities of a particular issue.

In this workshop we will focus on conceptualising creative solutions to help deal with the growing gap between ‘digital natives’ (who psychologists and anthropologists predict will be the ‘normals’ in 30 years time) and ‘analog people’, who are predicted to have difficulties with the digital world. During this session, participants will create quick prototypes that deal with the confrontation between these two mindsets, confronting old tools with new ones. Through this process, new “dormant” meanings will be revealed and analysed. (more…)
