    The Body is a Movement

DDW GYM WORKOUTS: Mind the Body, Move Matter

Participants will take part in a collective journey to explore a range of somatic, material-based exercises around the interrelatedness between the processing subject and the processed material. By moving, playing, observing, and listening, we obtain more accurate (body)images of ourselves in relation to others, the space we are in, and the materials we are dealing with.

For The Body is a Movement, Nina Glockner will facilitate a cross-disciplinary workshop for any kind of audience as part of re-thinking the ‘Gym’s class schedule’ to explore and develop a range of somatic, material-based exercises. She invites participants to take part in a collective journey to (re-) discover balance, flexibility, coordination, spatial and social awareness, by guiding them through a series of scores that focus on the ‘Who’, ‘Where’, ‘What’ and ‘How’ instead of the ‘Why’.
By moving, playing, observing, and listening, we will obtain more accurate (body)images of ourselves in relation to others, the space we are in, and the materials we are dealing with.

The interrelatedness between the processing subject and the processed material is a relevant aspect of a creative process in general: to which degree can a change in the subject’s intention, attention, and perceptiveness lead to a change in the creative process, action, and outcome?

The main aim of this embodied research is to create an increased awareness of the body and space by using various materials and objects. Through physical engagement with the involved materials, respectively with the used objects, there will be not only an expanding bodily awareness, but also a growing understanding of the nature of, for example, clay, a rope, water, a wooden stick. Objects offer feedback to the body and vice versa; by an increasing awareness of a participant, their perception and experience of the materiality of things is altered.

The workshop will be led by Nina Glockner:

Amsterdam-based artist Nina Glockner holds a Master in Fine arts from Sandberg Institute (NL), a Bachelor from Minerva Academie Groningen (NL), has studied philosophy at Humboldt University Berlin (D), and has been an artist-in-residency at the Jan van Eyck Academie Maastricht, NL, Van Gogh House London, UK, Fukuroda Mental Hospital JP, et al. Nina Glockner’s performative practice is about exploring the thin line between executing control and being under a state of control. It deals with (power) relationships among humans, objects, and actions in a given space – ranging from institutional and organisational, to the private. It is about creating a dialogue between these building modules that mark the social playground. Then within this, examining where subjectivity reveals an encounter with ‘the other’.

About the Body is a Movement
During DDW we reclaim and reconnect with our bodies in an exhibition (The Gym) and a workout programme. While living in capitalist structures, our bodies became vehicles for profit. to be optimised for productivity and efficiency. These beautiful, astonishing, wondrous bodies of ours, capable of experiencing so much joy and excitement - how can we reclaim them? You can find the full programme here.

The Body is a Movement is developed by Baltan Laboratories and Onomatopee, and kindly supported by Stichting Cultuur Eindhoven.
