DDW GYM WORKOUTS: Queer Sports Workshop

Through combining action and reflection, this workshop presents a series of games that reinvents sport as a queer pedagogy.

The goal of Gabriel’s methods is to give people a playful way of experiencing what the prevailing norms of identity, community and inclusion really mean, and how we can bring about change. For this, the workshop uses sport as the perfect metaphor, where the idea of playing ‘against each other’ is usually the norm. By allowing participants to perform multiple identities, the games will open up spaces for experimentation, play and collective reflection that challenge binary thinking.

The workshop will be led by Gabriel Fontana:
Gabriel Fontana is a creative director, who explores ways to reshape sports for upcoming societal shifts. His method involves designing new team sports that deconstruct group dynamics and foster empathy. In 2020, he developed Multiform for the city of Rotterdam; an educational program for schools that contributes to inclusive physical education. His games have been played in schools across Europe, at Nike World Headquarters and showcased in renowned venues like MoMA and W139 Amsterdam.

About the Body is a Movement
During DDW we reclaim and reconnect with our bodies in an exhibition (The Gym) and a workout programme. While living in capitalist structures, our bodies became vehicles for profit. to be optimised for productivity and efficiency. These beautiful, astonishing, wondrous bodies of ours, capable of experiencing so much joy and excitement - how can we reclaim them? You can find the full programme here.

The Body is a Movement is developed by Baltan Laboratories and Onomatopee, and kindly supported by Stichting Cultuur Eindhoven.
