Baltan presents the Ideophone by Dick Raaijmakers (1930 – 2013), a sound sculpture, that consists of 36 identically functioning speakers in a metal case. Assembled on every speaker, is a glass pipe with a little ball inside. When the speakers play sound, the balls move, creating striking effects.

Baltan Laboratories is named after Dick Raaijmakers, aka Kid Baltan, who recently passed away. Dick Raaijmakers pioneered in Dutch electronic and tape music in the 1950s at NatLab. As a teacher, thinker and composer, Raaijmakers has influenced the development of electro-instrumental and theatrical music in the Netherlands. As a teacher at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague he played an important role in electronic music and arts education. Dick Raaijmakers received several awards for his contribution to music, visual arts and theatre.

Due to the destructive nature of the work, the sound sculpture is presented with a sound recording. The richly illustrated ‘Dick Raaijmakers Monograph’ by Arjen Mulder and Joke Brouwer which was published by V2_publishing in 2006 is also on display. Many thanks to Anne Welmer, Todays Arts and V2 for making this project possible.

This project is supported by the municipality of Eindhoven.
