What does life look like in a completely virtual world?

If future humans (or post-humans) ever live in completely virtual worlds, what would their lives look like? With his VR project False Mirror, Ali Eslami attempts to answer this question by simply beginning to construct those worlds. EFF and Baltan Laboratories invite Ali Eslami to present his project and practice during the Eindhoven Film Festival.

False Mirror VR Lecture by Ali Eslami | Date: 29 November 2019 | Time: 14:00 - 15:15 | Location: Auditorium, Natlab, Kastanjelaan 500 | Tickets

False Mirror is an ongoing research project started in 2017, expanding floor after floor to create an infinite virtual city. The result is a unique experience that uses speculative design to imagine a possible future that’s continually growing and reshaping itself.

During this lecture-performance, Ali Eslami, wearing his VR Headset, will login to False Mirror with his virtual identity to explore and breakdown his future life with the audience: surfing through his home, revealing his modular post-human body and revisiting inner spaces in the city.

    Talent Talks by Pop Up Cinema | Date: 29 november 2019 | Time: 16:15 – 17:45 | Location: Zaal 3, Natlab, Kastanjelaan 500 | Tickets

Pop Up Cinema are experts in developing film concepts outside the regular cinema. In their Talent Talks, filmmakers are interviewed to give an insight into their filmmaking process. Find out what inspires them! In an in-depth interview with lots of visuals we dive into the personal world of the filmmakers. Next to Ali Eslami, Niels Hoebers and Thessa Meijer will join the conversation.

    About Ali Eslami
Ali Eslami is a Virtual Reality Artist and Practitioner from Iran who has been active and experimenting with VR since 2014. Ali’s work carves new pathways into this emerging medium by developing interactive experiences, driving his practice-led research. The experiences manifest as realities that blur fictional and non-fictional narratives, which strive to articulate possible futures. Ali compliments his process with speculative design and world-building and is ever questioning the restraints of physical space, time and bodies. Besides content production, Ali is active in running VR lectures and workshops. In 2016, his VR project won the IDFA DocLab Award for “Best Immersive non-fiction”.

    About EFF
EFF is an international film festival for unconventional independent film, organised at several vibrant locations in Eindhoven (NL). From November 28 – December 1 EFF will show you unconventional independent films varying from experimental shorts to breathtaking documentaries. Besides an extensive film programme you can enjoy a broad variety of film related extras like live film scores, workshops, talks and exhibitions. Activate your senses during EFF 2019.

    Homo Socialis
Ali’s lectures are part of one of Baltan’s three main topics; Homo Socialis. This topic investigates the tension between the individual and the collective, it counterbalances individualism with our deepest human desire to be part of a larger whole, such as a community.

This project is kindly supported by Creative Industries Fund NL, Provincie Noord-Brabant and Stichting Cultuur Eindhoven.
