Selected artists-in-residence: Roberto Peréz Gayo & Gabriel .A. Maher

In order to stimulate crossovers and experimentation, as well as to initiate new collaborations, Trudo and Baltan Laboratories established a 6-weeks artist-in-residence exploring the future of Strijp-S. Selected designers are Roberto Perez Gayo & Gabriel .A. Maher with their project Infrastructures for Participation.

From November 1 until December 15 Gayo and Maher will stay and work in Eindhoven to explore ways to transform Strijp-S into a more reflexive and participatory urban space. During this period, they will employ anthropological and design research methodologies aimed at visualizing and physicalizing the different design strategies, technologies and processes that through which identities are produced in smart public space. In doing so, they will open up opportunities for citizen participation.

Their main design research question for the residency is:

What are the strategies by which identities (gender, sexual, …) are produced and managed in urban space in Strijp-S? In a landscape of increasing quantification and algorithmic decision processes, how do urban infraestructures affect & orient behaviour, and what are the power relationships that arise in this context?

To answer this question, the designers will involve key stakeholders and community members of Strijp-S such as organizations, inhabitants, students and urban planners. The findings and results of the residency will be documented in a publication and presented in several public moments, including an exhibition in 2020.

    About the designers
As a collaborative duo of designers, with interdisciplinary backgrounds in architecture, social design, interaction design and EU policy, their practices center on critical, analytical and participatory approaches to design and research. Their work considers the effects of design and designing on bodies and the shaping of identity. Operating from queer and intersectional frameworks, they investigate relationships between bodies and spaces and examine the technologies and infrastructures that participate in their construction. Their collaborative work has focused on public space and architectural hybrids where computational technologies, media, and architecture meet. Roberto Pérez Gayo | Gabriel .A. Maher

    About Trudo
Trudo is a housing organization in Eindhoven that is slightly different. They made name for themselves with special projects, innovative products and pioneering initiatives. Their focus is not on real estate, but on the people they house. Trudo

    About Baltan Laboratories
Baltan Laboratories is a lab that initiates experimentation on the crossroads of art, design, science and technology. By bridging gaps between disciplines, they evoke inquisitive ideas and insights. The lab functions as a collaborative mindset and network, connecting curious individuals and organizations. Homo Socialis
This residency is part of one of Baltan’s three main topics; Homo Socialis. This topic investigates the tension between the individual and the collective, it counterbalances individualism with our deepest human desire to be part of a larger whole, such as a community.

This project is kindly supported by Creative Industries Fund NL, Provincie Noord-Brabant and Stichting Cultuur Eindhoven.
