We completed the final selection for the 2027 artistic residency in the SIT-PLU project. This year, Baltan Laboratories and on-site facilitator wondermash received nearly 100 applications for the residency, and we are happy to announce the selected residents, artistic duo Gaia D’Arrigo and Esther van der Heijden
About Gaia and Esther
Gaia is an Italian, Rotterdam-based multimedia artist and social designer. In her practice, she explores how industrial processes, belief systems, and cultural heritage are embedded in the materials that surround us, acting as living archives. Esther is a multimedia artist and filmmaker based in Amsterdam. Her work examines changing watery ecosystems and how environmental and economic pressures affect human and non-human life.
Both practices are research-based and combine field research, archival inquiry, interviews and interdisciplinary collaborations to investigate processes of ecological change, pollution, and adaptation. Their work takes shape through multimedia installations, film, sculpture, performance, workshop and collective experience, bringing together material experimentation and fact-fictional storytelling. Working on site-specific projects, they examine the interaction between environments, materials, and bodies to create hybrid narratives that connect lived experiences to broader socio-environmental transformations.
About the Residency
SIT-PLU, Situated Creative Practices for the Pluriverse, is a Creative Europe Cooperation project that aims to address various socio-ecological challenges, such as sustainable human-non-human relationships and the multifaceted nature of renewable energy projects, through cross-disciplinary research and context-specific artistic interventions. For this residency, Baltan Laboratories collaborates with wondermash in Horst to explore the (cultural) ecosystem of the Limburg region and the Meuse Delta.
The selected artists were The SIT-PLU residency will be part of wondermash’s futures ecologies work where they invite artists to add to the living storyscape in a region of the Meuse delta and excavate, reimagine, deconstruct or reanimate stories from the soil, stories that have roots in this area or take wings and give voice to ignored, drowned, buried or dying protagonists. It is about stories that are true in the most literal sense of the word: they carry a truth that will last for generations. Because stories are never created or preserved in isolation, artists are encouraged to build a relationship with the land and its inhabitants and to start a practice that will continue to be (partially) rooted in place after they leave.
The Proposal
Gaia and Esther propose to examine the landscape of the Meuse Delta using the concept of the monstrous as a lens by which to investigate the complex relationships between humans, non-humans, infrastructures, and environmental change. They will approach the landscape itself as a starting point for collecting stories, materials, and perspectives, which will then inform the development of speculative creatures, collective experiences and a filmic atlas.
Gaia and Esther see the monster as a transdisciplinary lens through which different actors, histories, and environmental processes can become entangled within one body. By selecting specific sites within the Meuse Delta and zooming into their ecological, material, social, and cultural layers, they will investigate these relationships through a situated, cross-scale approach.

Wij hanteren een bewaartermijn van maximaal 2 jaar voor persoonsgegevens en contactinformatie met als reden de garantie van continuïteit in de uitvoering van de programma's van Baltan Laboratories.
Baltan Laboratories verkoopt jouw gegevens niet aan derden en zal deze uitsluitend verstrekken indien dit nodig is voor de uitvoering van onze overeenkomst met jou of om te voldoen aan een wettelijke verplichting. Met bedrijven die jouw gegevens verwerken in onze opdracht, sluiten wij een bewerkersovereenkomst om te zorgen voor eenzelfde niveau van beveiliging en vertrouwelijkheid van jouw gegevens. Baltan Laboratories blijft verantwoordelijk voor deze verwerkingen.

Je hebt het recht om je persoonsgegevens in te zien, te corrigeren of te verwijderen. Daarnaast heb je het recht om je eventuele toestemming voor de gegevensverwerking in te trekken of bezwaar te maken tegen de verwerking van jouw persoonsgegevens door Baltan Laboratories en heb je het recht op gegevensoverdraagbaarheid.
