Other/Self is a perfomative work, which incorporates scientific research and aesthetic experience. At STRP Biennale, visitors will have the opportunity to immerse themselves daily.

Other/Self is a collaboration between Chris Salter, TeZ and Luis Rodil Fernández with Philips Research, Holst Centre, Baltan Laboratories and other partners. Artist Chris Salter is an authority when it comes to exploring frontier areas between the senses, art, design and technology. has been developed in the context of Salters research project to the ‘Qualified Self ‘. This as opposed to the widely dominant ‘Quantified Self movement’, which in his opinion reduces many of our bio-sensory data to flat number sequences which contribute little to the complexity of the human experience.

Two visitors put on a set of wearable sensors and actuators. Sitting side by side but facing in opposite directions, the visitors are suddenly plunged into total darkness. The installation consists of an immersive sound, light and haptic experience. Very gradually, each individual begins to barely feel the heartbeat of the other, transferred and transformed into various luminous, acoustic and haptic patterns at varying levels of intensity. As the visitors’ breathing and heartbeats come into synchrony, the sensorial and corporeal encounter begins to change. Rapid, abrupt changes of light, sound and vibration build to an uncanny climax in which the border between self and other, self and environment dissolves.

Other/Self will be presented at the STRP Biennale 2017 at Klokgebouw Eindhoven from March 25th - April 2nd. Please see the STRP festival program for the full timetable and additional information...
