Fiction as a toolset for innovation

Build an alternative Eindhoven with Imagination of Things

The way we imagine our future is heavily influenced by current narratives (stories, products, services) and their hidden or embedded point-of-views. From sci-fi to futuristic design, these narratives influence the way we bridge our current reality and near future scenarios. They affect our hope (or lack of), our desires, and our abilities to make decisions with lasting effects.

This workshop blends design fiction exercises, developed by Imagination of Things, with new experiments that explore narrative devices around machine intelligence as an imagination catalyst. In a city so focused with its future, we will collectively fabulate an alternative Eindhoven that can give space to interrogate its cultural narratives and assumptions. After co-creating a fictional world, we end our session with conceptual prototypes that can open conversations about what’s next and hopefully inspire a different approach to challenges faced by the participants in their practice. Our research starts with this question: How can we better exercise ownership of our imagination when inventing, designing, developing long-term visions & near-futures scenarios?

    Regular ticket: €10 | Student ticket: €7,50

Imagination of Things, with support and collaboration from Baltan Laboratories, is embarking on a journey to research and develop a tool/device/game/toolkit/mixer to encourage and inspire groups to inhabit their own imagination, remix broken futures, and to explore new thoughtful territories (alternative, hypothetical, speculative, critical).

This workshop marks the beginning of this research process and we invite people to join us in this experience — a collaborative design process that uses fiction as a toolset for innovation. Together we will navigate future uncertainty and push beyond quotidian problem solving methods to create problem setting, inventing concepts to unlock a story of what could be.

    About Imagination of Things
Imagination of Things is a design fiction studio based in Amsterdam. They use narrative design and creative technology to unfold more imagination in our lives. Recently, they helped an insurance company imagine its future, intervened in the official EU parliament tour offering a playful & critical new perspective, and they are currently creating an experiential project for a hotel network to foster social interaction. They also have been developing methodologies around design fiction, workshops and research-based projects in places like Eindhoven (Baltan Laboratories, Cultuur Eindhoven), Maastricht (MAMDT & iArts), Lisbon, and Strasbourg (Shadok). The studio is directed by Vitor Freire and Monique Grimord with a network of passionate collaborators in the Netherlands, Brazil, and USA.
