What forms of technology become possible when we begin with living systems rather than machines?

    (Dutch below)

In this hands-on workshop, we will explore the quiet intelligence of mud, a place where bacteria, minerals, water, and electricity meet. Together, we will transform mud gathered from a nearby pond into microbial fuel cells, living batteries that generate electricity through the metabolism of naturally occurring bacteria.

Guided by artist Sunjoo Lee, participants will build their own mud batteries and experiment with energy-harvesting circuits designed to work with slow, fluctuating, and living sources of power. Rather than treating energy as something to extract, this workshop invites us to encounter electricity as a process of collaboration between biological and technological worlds.

Part of the Nature Technology Community of Practice, the workshop opens a space to imagine technologies shaped by interdependence, care, and coexistence. Through making, observing, and discussing, we will consider what it means to design with living organisms and how such practices might expand our understanding of computation, infrastructure, and the more-than-human world.

No prior experience with electronics or biology is needed, only curiosity and a willingness to work with mud.

    About the facilitator

Sunjoo Lee is an interdisciplinary artist based in the Netherlands working across art, technology, and ecology. Her practice investigates how electronics and digital technologies might evolve beyond exclusively human interests, drawing on more-than-human philosophy, biomimicry, emergence, future forms of symbiosis, and permacomputing.

Working in close collaboration with biologists, ecologists, and engineers, she develops artistic research and multimedia installations that cultivate new relationships between the biosphere and the technosphere. Her work has been presented internationally, including at Ars Electronica Festival, Kunstvereniging Diepenheim, iMAL, and iii.

With the support of Stichting Cultuur Eindhoven.

    ----
