Students in the Communication & Multimedia Design department of the Avans University of Applied Sciences in ‘s-Hertogenbosch have initiated a project to create awareness around misleading data in journalism.

The project is named Dataïsm, which derives from the Dada art movement. Dadaism is mocking the ways we design and interpret traditional arts. If the word Dataïsm would be in a dictionary it would be described as: Da-ta-ïsm [the], the act of consciously manipulating data.

In collaboration with Baltan Laboratories, the students are organising an exhibition from July 1 – 31, 2016: Dataïsm. Through a series of interactive posters, the audience will be confronted with both misleading and truthful data. This contrast will encourage the audience to think more critically about their own conception of data, recognize manipulation and enables the visitor to single out misleading information. Every visitor is invited to test their own ability to distinguish false from truthful data.
