In October, we carried out the final series of the fAIr media workshop, hosted by Wilbert Vogel, an artist, live coder and programmer. On October 17th, we had 2 workshops, one in the morning and one in the afternoon: the second iteration of the Fabricating Realities workshop that we hosted already in February, and the new format It’s true, I saw it in the news. On October 30th, we did another iteration of the workshop It’s true, I saw it in the news for the journalism students of Koning Willem I College in Den Bosch.

    ➡️ Fabricating Realities

The workshop began with an introduction to the history of famous fake news, such as Alex Jones's conspiracy theories. Then, the participants created fake news articles. First, they were invited to generate fake images using Firefly, Stable Diffusion and Dream Studio software, followed by a discussion on the outcomes (Funny & Scary? Quite realistic? Too perfect? Hopelessness?). Then the participants created titles for the pictures using Clickbait. Wilbert explained the concept of deepfake and presented some examples. Then the participants were invited to create biased content and reflect on what different types of biased content have in common and how it can be made believable. In addition to the image and title, the participants used ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and Gemini to create believable fake news that matched their images and titles. The workshop concluded with a discussion of tactics to recognise fake news.

➡️ It's true, I saw it in the news

The workshop began with tips for recognising AI-generated images. Then the participants played exquisite prompts game, exquisite corps game, altered for the needs of the workshop. Several TikTok videos followed the game. Wilbert presented the first widely spread deepfake, The Volkov Incident. Then, Wilbert also explained the cases of scams involving AI-generated sounds and voices. Finally, the participants worked on creating AI-generated videos using Elevenlabs.
