Board Members: Business & Finance and Art & Technology

The vacancy is closing on December 21st.

Baltan is looking for two new board members with two different profiles: one with a corporate/legal/financial profile, who is open to take on the treasure’s role; and one with experience in and knowledge of the cultural sector, specifically the digital culture, media art, art-science field and cross-overs of art-technology.

Baltan is a lab and development institution focused on (talent) development, learning, and research residencies. It explores the relationships between humans, non-humans and technology in the context of societal challenges. The lab embraces experimentation, encouraging curiosity and welcoming uncertainty, free from predefined outcomes or disciplinary constraints. In the tech ecosystem of Eindhoven, we offer a platform for debate around the societal effects of technology connecting to companies, cultural institutions, makerspaces, and academies in the region. Its BlaBlaLab space is a community for tech-based art practitioners and a collaborative co-working/making environment for designers, writers, tech enthusiasts and researchers.

Baltan has always been identified as a lab experimenting at the crossroads of art, science, design and technology. In the first years of Baltan, art and technology were the primary focus, together with media art. Over the years, we progressively moved away from a technology/media-based discussion and critique in art and design to focus on societal challenges and how art and design could contribute to those. In recent years however, we have seen that technological developments are increasingly driving and pushing the societal challenges we are discussing. As an organisation with its roots in media art, and art & technology, we feel a strong responsibility to stay with the topic of technological developments and how tightly they are connected with climate change, inequalities, warfare, and a loss of freedom and rights.

We think that, especially today, Baltan should fulfil its social role as a cultural institution in the permanent state of crisis we live in by being a site of discussion, learning and organising towards the challenges we need to deal with. Culture in our vision should be one of the prominent agents of change, as we believe that change is primarily cultural and behavioural before political, infrastructural and solution-based.

Baltan does this through learning trajectories, talent development trajectories, workshops, exhibitions, conferences and festivals on a local, national and international/European context. We often work in the context of European collaboration projects (Creative Europe, Horizon, CERN, Erasmus+) or in collaboration with our international partners. In the coming period our ambition lies in strengthening our position outside of the cultural field, with a focus on citizens and the people who are professionals in the tech sector.

    Profiles we are looking for
To strengthen our board, we are looking for two new board members. One profile
that could contribute to the further business development of Baltan with experience in e.g. business, marketing, financial and/or legal matters. Preferably someone who is interested to take on a position in the board as treasurer. Next to that we are looking for a person with experience in and knowledge of the media, art, technology and digital culture field. Baltan is often working in multi-disciplinary collaboration projects, we encourage people with experience in such collaboration projects to apply.

    What the position entails
The effort includes attendance at board meetings and willingness to provide advice (by email or telephone) and contribute ideas for Baltan development. Board meetings on average take place 4 times a year, once a quarter in the Natlab in Eindhoven, just after regular working hours. A position on the Baltan board is unpaid. Compensation for travel expenses is provided. For more information about the role of a board member, we suggest having a look at the Cultural Governance Code.

We aim to have the new board members installed in January 2026.
