The City is Creative at flux-s

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

From September 10-13, 2009, the vast, bare concrete floors of the monumental Hoge Rug buildings and Veemgebouw (the old warehouse building), together with the impressive street of pipelines, the Natlab (the former physics laboratory) and the wasteland in between, constituted the setting and stage for an international selection of artists and performers during flux-s.

For the festival, artist Michelle Teran developed a new site-specific work The City is Creative in residence at BALTAN Laboratories, which was installed on the first floor of the Veemgebouw during flux-s. See all of the photos and videos from the project as well as more information about the infra-red flashlight interface developed by Mr. Stock Interfaces for the work.

A session on spatialisation – report from BALTAN goes NATLAB 3

Friday, May 29, 2009 saw the third in our BALTAN goes NATLAB series of presentations, this time devoted different strategies of spatialisation in audiovisual art and how this alters our understanding of technology-driven forms of art. This evening was moderated by Lucas van der Velden from the collective Telcosystems.

Norwegian artist HC Gilje explored how audiovisual technology can be used to transform, create, expand, amplify and interpret physical spaces. He presented the research he has been doing over the last three years during his research fellowship at the National Academy of the Arts in Bergen (KHIB).

A View on Looking – report from BALTAN goes NATLAB 2

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

On April 24, 2009, BALTAN hosted the second in its BALTAN goes NATLAB series at the former Philips NatLab at Strijp-S in Eindhoven. Curated and moderated by artist Geert Mul, the focus of this session was on the philosophy of perception and how artificial intelligence and robotics can lead to a deeper understanding of human behaviour itself. We invited 3 speakers to present very different perspectives on the topic.

The first speaker was Thom Warmerdam from Philips Applied Technologies who gave a presentation of the artificial eye that he is developing. His presentation also shed a light on how the brain constructs an image.

He also brought along the robotic eye (currently inhabiting a stuffed bear) to demonstrate his current research.

Collaborations between artistic and technological disciplines can generate new insights into different ways of thinking as well as working methods. BALTAN Laboratories is concerned both with investigating who the residents of these hybrid spaces of expertise are as well as their experiences. This three-part program was put together to both show and tell an arts/technology tale starting with urban interventions, delving into effective collaboration techniques and then ending with bright, lateral thinking.  (more…)
