Book presentation, exhibition and lecture
On Thursday, September 24th, Onomatopee guest curates a special edition of BALTAN goes NATLAB dedicated to the English translation of Dick Raaijmakers’ ‘De methode’ by Vincent W.J. van Gerven Oei. Presented in the former Philips NatLab at Strijp-S in Eindhoven, this session will act as an historical inspiration for present day multidisciplinary approaches to technological culture.
Dick Raaijmakers (Maastricht, 1930), technical engineer and one if the founding fathers of electronic music, published ‘De methode’ (translated as Method) in 1985. ‘De methode’ dealt with the application of the machine as medium and the role of movers and perceivers within a communication process. ‘Method’ is an important vision that investigates communication at the start of a new technological era and is relevant for anyone looking for an innovative and creative approach to our (technological) culture.
Vincent W.J. van Gerven Oei, artist, linguist, and PhD candidate in philosophy at the European Graduate School (CH) studied the work of Raaijmakers and translated ‘De methode’ into English. During the presentation, he will present the findings of his research. Additionally, students of the Artez Art Academy Arnhem will present a series of graphic interpretations of Method, hosted by their teacher and Onomatopee director Remco van Bladel (NL).
BALTAN goes NATLAB is a monthly series devoted to presenting and contributing to BALTAN Laboratories’ research programme Poème Numérique. Previous guest speakers have included Tim Edler from realities:united (Germany), artists BULL.MILETIC (Norway), Thom Warmerdam (Philips, NL), Willem van Weelden (NL), designer Christien Meindertsma (NL), sound artist Lorenzo Brusci (IT), artist HC Gilje (NO) and Michelle Teran (CA).
ABOUT POEME NUMERIQUE
Research projects undertaken in 2009 and 2010 by Telcosystems, Geert Mul and Maurer United Architects are elaborated under this umbrella, which is a contemporary investigation of interdisciplinary collaboration and integration of media. Poème Numérique is a research trajectory that represents a common ground for the work, ideas and collaboration of Telcosystems, Mul and MUA and that investigates the power of these different media and perspectives coming together in physical space. It will culminate in a presentation of a larger utopian vision at the end of the pilot phase of BALTAN in 2010. This innovative research is inspired by the renowned Poème Electronique, the Philips pavilion from the world exhibition in Brussels in 1958.

ABOUT ONOMATOPEE
Editions and issues, that’s what Onomatopee is involved in, specializing in poetry, typography and sound art, and dedicated to site-specific, contextual projects of which many deal with critical notions on design. Defining themselves as a ‘production label’, their modus operandi lies somewhere in between a commercial gallery and an artist-run space, in between a commercial publisher and the scene of an underground record label. Every edition comes with some kind of presentation/exhibition and likewise. They both produce and artistically manage projects, and like to work with other people and organisations, in their own gallery space or elsewhere.
